The Coach's Corner
Thank you for your interest in Bama Hockey. The Frozen Tide is coming off of a tremendous '07-'08 season finishing in the top ten of the ACHA Southeastern Division and earning a trip to the Regional Play-offs in Atlanta, Georgia. That inspiring play should continue into the upcoming season in accordance to a number of veterans returning along with a group of promising freshman and a solid new coaching staff. On that note, Bama Hockey would like to thank Darren Awender for his hard work and contributions from the beginning days of the Frozen Tide. He was a vital part of the growth to getting the program where it is now. Good luck to you Darren in all of your future endeavors. You will be missed! Bama Hockey finished last season with an impressive 13 - 9 - 1 record and have made major developments in the program only after its second full season. The Frozen Tide have taken on some of the top teams in the Southeastern Division and in that short amount of time have become competitive with teams and programs that have been in existence for many years. The media and the University of Alabama have began to take notice of the Tide's early success with helping to promote and spark interest for the upcoming season. Bama Hockey also has the support of a wonderful booster club in its corner and a number of off-ice volunteers that are vital for the program in order to move forward. The '08-'09 season started off with a bang with the additions of assistant coaches, UAH grad, Mike Quenneville and former Birmingham Bull, Ian Hebert. Training camp was another pleasant surprise and definite contrast from the first 15 players that tried out in the Tide's inaugural season with 40+ players showing up and competing for a spot on the team. The team has been built with a valuable core group of returning players, some of which are member of the original 15 combined with some excellent new talent. Since the recent success of the Frozen Tide players from all over the country including Colorado and New York have come to be a part of Bama Hockey. The Tide has compiled a difficult 27 game schedule (13 home games) including dates with Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson and defending regional champions, Tennessee. The Tide will kick off the season hosting MTSU on September 19th and 20th at 8 PM at the Pelham Civic Complex, Pelham, Alabama. The Frozen Tide players must maintain a full time student status and a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible to participate. The team will practice and play all of their games at the Pelham Civic Complex, commuting 50+ miles. This sacrifice and hard work has paid off and earned Alabama the privilege of hosting the first ever SEC hockey championship in February 27th - March 1st 2009. In closing, the coaches would like to thank the boosters, parents and fans for all of their support throughout the season. We couldn't do it without you. We encourage all hockey fans to come out and enjoy some hockey! If you have any questions, please contact me. Jeff Cheeseman Head Coach Bama Hockey |
